If you watched a political commercial every other minute, tripped over yard signs, or noticed a forum that took place on your favorite channel, you could of guessed what time it was! It was election time!
The General Election took place on November 2nd. This was a crucial time for people to get involved and place their vote. It is our civic responsibility. “Voting is a privilege we have in this country which lets us have a say in who is running our government. If you don't vote, you have no right to complain about government decisions,” Mrs. Shirlyn Christensen, Foreign Language and Middle School Science teacher, said. There is no reason not to vote. There was absentee voting and the general election. Politics were everywhere, candidates were getting out there and talking to the people, telling them why they should vote for them, putting out yard signs, hanging up billboards, and making telephone calls. There was no way to ignore it. When asked, fourteen out of fourteen Deuel teachers said they were going to vote. “It is a person's opportunity to have a say in how they want government to be. If you choose not to vote then you better be willing to accept what the results are and what the people elected do,” an anonymous teacher said. Fifteen students from the Deuel senior class were eighteen and eligible to vote also. One out of four students, when asked if they were registered to vote, said yes. “It should be a privilege for us young people to have a say with who will represent South Dakota,” Senior Briana DeBoer said.
Hopefully everyone took full advantage of this past election, and got out there and put your vote in! If not, there are always more elections to come that you should definitely take part in! You have a say in who are our elected officials will be and who will represent you the best.
This story will also appear in the Clear Lake Courier in the November 10th issue.
