Michael Phelps is one of the greatest Olympic competitors the world has ever seen. That is just an opinion from an 18 year-old high school kid but that is not only my opinion. There are hundreds of thousands, even millions who think the same thing. From the Sydney Olympics in 2000 to Athens in 2004, he is now, after the Beijing Games in 2008, a living Olympic legend. With an unbelievable performance earning him eight gold medals and seven world-record times, his performance at the 2008 Games set a new standard for success. He is, by far and away, among the greatest athletes in the world, and is a role model to millions. In No Limits, Michael Phelps’ biography, he reveals the secrets to his success.
I think he is a lot like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods and other greats in the sense that they all know how to get rid of distractions and be the best ever. As Phelps says in the beginning of his book, the road was not easy. Phelps had to overcome several physical and emotional setbacks. When Phelps was younger, he was diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD. The other kids, at the school he went to in Baltimore, bullied him. Even one of his teachers said he would never be successful. Later, he had to work through injuries that jeopardized his career. He goes on to say how he overcame all of these distractions.
“His success is imbued with the perspective of overcoming the obstacles that come your way and believing in yourself no matter the odds,” says Scott VanPelt from ESPN on his ESPN radio show.
I really enjoyed this book because it teaches patients and hard work as well as determination. Phelps has to be on the list of top 10 athletes of all time. What he did was unbelievable, undeniable, and unrepeatable. My mom got me this book for Christmas and it I not a hard read but enjoyable all at the same time. I would suggest this book to anyone, especially sports fans but not only them. This book does talk about the Olympics and competition but it is also a feel good story and a very good read.
