Distracted Driving Mock Accident

Students were a little spooked this morning, when a student assembly turned into an emergency. The whole charade was just a mock accident, but there was a purpose behind the scene. The mock accident was held by the Health Council to teach students about the effects of distracted driving. The two boys in the car were "late" for school and texted their friends to let them know. In the mean time, two younger students walking across the street were struck by their car. Both students that were hit were taken to the E.R. by ambulance. The fire department and police arrived on the scene a few seconds later. The driver was questioned by a police officer and taken downtown. One student later died in the E.R. and the other sustained injuries.
I don't mean any offense to the people who held the mock accident, but I don't think it had a huge emotional toll on me. The situation wasn't as horrifying and serious as I expected. There was no crying or emotion going on. The layout of the two students hit wasn't realistic for how they were supposedly hit by the car. I thought it was funny when the police officer got locked out of his patrol car when he arrested the driver. I like this example of a mock accident. I think the cars should have been more damaged and kids actually trapped inside the vehicles would be a ton more effective. I would have liked to see the jaws of life and how it work. That probably would have scared the distracted driver out of me.
