Defeat of the Dolphins!

The Lady Cardinals traveled to Toronto last night to take on the Deubrook Dolphins. This was the Dolphins first game of the season, while the Cards held a 2-0 record.

The Cardinals struggled to make their baskets but made up for it on defense. After the first quarter it was 12-10, with the Cardinals leading. At half time it was 28-18. The third quarter was a struggle for the team, making only 3 shots. They went into the 4th quarter at 31-26. The ending score of the game was 42-34, for a Cardinal victory. The Varsity is now 3-0.

The JV team ended their game 22-24, as their first loss of the season. The JV is now 2-1.

Both JV and Varsity are playing very well together and have fun out on the court. Hopefully the teams continue to keep ending their nights with "W" throughout the season!

Never Give Up!

Playing with heart was definitely acted out in last nights District Volleyball match. The Deuel Varsity Volleyball team defeated the Deubrook Dolphins for the first round of Districts.
The match went into five games, Deuel winning 3-2. The Dolphins took the first two games while the Cards played slow and unenthusiastically. For the Cardinals, it looked as if the third game was a done deal! It took heart, confidence, and courage for the team to pull off the third game with a 26-24 win. That was the turning point and from then on the Cards were on fire! Needless to say, we showed the Dolphins WHO the Deuel Cardinals really are!

On Thursday, November 4th, the Cardinals will face off against the Sioux Valley Cossacks in Volga at 7:00 pm for the second round of Districts. The team would really appreciate for everyone to show up and support them. The cheering and uplifting attitude has been great and really does help the team get pumped!

Brock Hanten is going on his second year of cross country. His favorite part are the bus rides to the meets. Hanten likes the Deubrook course because he thinks he does the best there. His goal for this year is to improve his time from last year. Hanten said, “I will miss the in depth talks and conversations on the bus rides.” His favorite memory is when the team attermped to build a fifteen person pyramid at the Desmet meet. Hanten plans to go to college after high school but doesn't know where or for what.

First time's a charm. This is Drew Trautman's first year in cross country. Trautman's favorite course is the Webster course because it's very flat. He also got his best time there. “I will miss all the fun the team had together throughout the year,” said Trautman. He plans on going to college to get a degree in Business Management after high school.

Shaina Mack has been in cross country since 7th grade. Her favorite part about cross country is the bus rides and Shirley Krause's, cross country runner Adam Krause's grandma, cookies. Senior Track Spotlight

This year there are four seniors participating in track and field.

Terran Smith has been in track for five years. She competes in the triple jump, long jump, and the 200 meter dash. Smith says the hardest thing about track is the hard workouts during practice. Smith said, "My favorite memory from track is when Coach Brian Tvedt made me run the two mile. It was ridiculous, but now I think it's funny." After high school, Smith plans to attend NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota next fall.

Brittany Sik is a first timer to track. Sik runs the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the two by four relay. Her goals for this year are to stay in shape and reach certain times on her events. "So far my favorite meet has been the Dan Lennon meet because I met a lot of new people," said Sik. Next fall Sik plans to attend SDSU and major in psychology.

Eric Lundberg has been running track for six years. "My favorite memory from track was when Wesley Greber plowed a girl over at the NSU Invite," said Lundberg. His main goal this year is to make it to the state tournament. After high school, Eric plans to attend Dakota Wesleyan University to play football and major in Athletic Training and Physical Therapy.

Spencer Schmahl has been in track for two years. He is in the long jump, triple jump, and some running events. After graduating Spencer plans to attend LATI for building trades technology.

Cross Country: state-bound

The cross country team has had a good run so far. With only regions left to go, they are state-bound.
The team has had an extraordinary increase in runners this year. Explaining why their is such an increase in numbers, "Everyone wants to train for their other sports" Mr Tvedt, cross country coach said. There have been setbacks due to weather also this year. Two consecutive meets have been cancelled due to rain this year. "In my eleven years of coaching, we haven't had any meets cancelled until this year," Mr. Tvedt said. Some valuable runners have joined just this year, which really benefits the team's results. The senior runners include: Lauren Brandt, Derek Kielty, Jordan Stahn, and Matthew Goens. Having experienced runners on the team give support and tips for better running. The team has great expectations for state this year. The state meet will be held in Rapid City on October 24th. A girls' varsity team, consisting of Mackenzie Mack, Shaina Mack, Karli Hintz, Gabbie Nelson, and Lauren Brandt, are expected to make it. Jordan Stahn and Adam Krause are also expected to make it individually.
"The runners have great work ethic, and good attitudes, which makes them fun to coach," Mr. Tvedt said. They have to be motivated because they know everyday at practice they will have to run around 2 miles. Maybe the freezies everyday after practice keeps them motivated!

Cardinal Kids Cheer Camp

Here come the Cardinal Cheerleaders of tomorrow ready to cheer the Cards on to victory. At the football game on the 9th against Clark/Willow Lake, 15 of Deuel School's 4th through 8th grade girls took center field at halftime to show off their cheerleading skills after two days of practicing at a mini cheer camp.

On the Wednesday and Thursday before the game, the girls met after school for about an hour to learn a dance and cheer. Football and Basketball cheerleading coach Sheila Monnier said, “ This is an opportunity for the kids to see what cheerleading is like.” The cost of the camp was $20 per child, and the money brought in from this camp went toward t-shirts, and future cheerleading camps in the summer. “I think they did a really awesome job this year, even though the weather wasn't very nice,” says Monnier about how the girls did at their performance.

When asked what advice she'd give younger girls thinking about going out for cheerleading in the future freshman football and basketball cheerleader Brandi Barondeau said, “Go out for the camps, and work as hard as you can. If your not sure, go out for it anyways, and try it because it's so much fun!”
