Getting closer to the finish line is Brock Hanten, Drew Trautman, and Shaina Mack. These three are the seniors are this year's cross country team.
Brock Hanten is going on his second year of cross country. His favorite part are the bus rides to the meets. Hanten likes the Deubrook course because he thinks he does the best there. His goal for this year is to improve his time from last year. Hanten said, “I will miss the in depth talks and conversations on the bus rides.” His favorite memory is when the team attermped to build a fifteen person pyramid at the Desmet meet. Hanten plans to go to college after high school but doesn't know where or for what.
First time's a charm. This is Drew Trautman's first year in cross country. Trautman's favorite course is the Webster course because it's very flat. He also got his best time there. “I will miss all the fun the team had together throughout the year,” said Trautman. He plans on going to college to get a degree in Business Management after high school.
Shaina Mack has been in cross country since 7th grade. Her favorite part about cross country is the bus rides and Shirley Krause's, cross country runner Adam Krause's grandma, cookies. Mack has set many goals for herself this year. She wants to place top twenty every meet, qualify for state, and place at state. She has accomplished the goal of making it state, both as part of the team and individualy. Mack said, “I will miss all of my teammates and the friends I made while participating in the sport.” After high school Mack plans on attending SDSU for nursing.
This year there are four seniors participating in track and field.
Terran Smith has been in track for five years. She competes in the triple jump, long jump, and the 200 meter dash. Smith says the hardest thing about track is the hard workouts during practice. Smith said, "My favorite memory from track is when Coach Brian Tvedt made me run the two mile. It was ridiculous, but now I think it's funny." After high school, Smith plans to attend NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota next fall.
Brittany Sik is a first timer to track. Sik runs the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the two by four relay. Her goals for this year are to stay in shape and reach certain times on her events. "So far my favorite meet has been the Dan Lennon meet because I met a lot of new people," said Sik. Next fall Sik plans to attend SDSU and major in psychology.
Eric Lundberg has been running track for six years. "My favorite memory from track was when Wesley Greber plowed a girl over at the NSU Invite," said Lundberg. His main goal this year is to make it to the state tournament. After high school, Eric plans to attend Dakota Wesleyan University to play football and major in Athletic Training and Physical Therapy.
Spencer Schmahl has been in track for two years. He is in the long jump, triple jump, and some running events. After graduating Spencer plans to attend LATI for building trades technology.
Here come the Cardinal Cheerleaders of tomorrow ready to cheer the Cards on to victory. At the football game on the 9th against Clark/Willow Lake, 15 of Deuel School's 4th through 8th grade girls took center field at halftime to show off their cheerleading skills after two days of practicing at a mini cheer camp.
On the Wednesday and Thursday before the game, the girls met after school for about an hour to learn a dance and cheer. Football and Basketball cheerleading coach Sheila Monnier said, “ This is an opportunity for the kids to see what cheerleading is like.” The cost of the camp was $20 per child, and the money brought in from this camp went toward t-shirts, and future cheerleading camps in the summer. “I think they did a really awesome job this year, even though the weather wasn't very nice,” says Monnier about how the girls did at their performance.
When asked what advice she'd give younger girls thinking about going out for cheerleading in the future freshman football and basketball cheerleader Brandi Barondeau said, “Go out for the camps, and work as hard as you can. If your not sure, go out for it anyways, and try it because it's so much fun!”
