Deuel Gymnastics

The Deuel Gymnastics team went to the state meet this weekend. The meet was held in Brookings, SD at the Swiftel Center. Team day was on Friday, February 17 and the individual day followed. They managed to bring home another state title. “Being repeat champions is a great feeling. We had something to prove this year that Deuel is a viable program and one that we are going to fight hard to continue in our winning ways,” stated Coach Lynn Gudmundson. On Sunday, February 19, there was a welcome home for the girls at the Gymnastics Building.

The Deuel Gymnasts came out on top with a 145.846. That is the highest score ever scored at a Class “A” gymnastics meet. Madison was second with a 141.979. “The team day was very fun, exciting, even though we supposedly didn't have pressure, it still felt like we had pressure,” said Junior Samantha Wiekamp. The members of the team were Samantha Wiekamp, Alex Stein, Karina Noem, Katie Plut, Stephanie Greber, Kelly Wollschlager. The team doesn't lose anyone for next year. “The team is going to be working on new skills to make us better,” stated Wiekamp. The team is going to be working very hard in the offseason. “Next year will be great with everyone returning. I fully expect that we will pick up where we left off this year and be even stronger next season,” said Coach Gudmundson.

The Deuel Cardinals had a full team on individual day. Six of them qualified to do every event. The team took home 22 individual medals, five of those were champion titles. Meaghan Sievers was first on beam, floor, and all-around. Samantha Wiekamp took first on the bars and the vault. Other girls that placed in the top 20 were Alex Stein, Katie Plut, and Kelly Wollschlager.
