Since South Dakota is no stranger to blizzards and a lot of snow, I thought I would look at the South Dakota Department of Transportation's website. Their best advice is to stay home and not drive unless it's absolutely necessary. And if you do decide to venture out of the house, you should look on Safe Travel USA or call 511 to check your local road conditions. Here are a few other quick tips:
1. Never use cruise control on slippery surfaces.
2. Don't follow behind other cars too closely.
3. Let someone know when you're leaving and when you arrive.
4. Slow down, you don't always need to drive the speed limit.
5. Be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses.
And in case you do end up stranded in the snow:
1. Stay inside your car and call 911.
2. Always keep a survival kit inside your car. It should contain a blanket, food, water, gloves & a hat, and a candle to light to keep warm.
3. Turn on the dome light, and conserve gasoline.
4. Use anything to add insulation to your vehicle.
5. Do light exercises to keep warm, and check for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
