I was recently reading a magazine article about the new TSA safety regulations, and some of the stories I heard were a bit disturbing. The Transportation Security Administration has created new rules for airport security, but some say it doesn't make them feel very "secure".
The TSA has started using full body scanners, which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't show a detailed profile of every persons anatomy to the workers. If you refuse to get a scan, you have to go through a more thorough full body pat-down by a security officer. Some of which are a little too close for comfort. The lady being interviewed in this article said the officer was allowed to grab her buttocks and other "areas" I won't mention. She felt like she was violated and abused, and won't feel the same about flying ever again. And one elderly lady from Houston, Texas was forced to take off her clothing and underwear after her prosthetic knee set off scanner alarms.
I personally believe that this is just a little bit ridiculous. I understand that they are just trying to keep planes and their passengers safe, but putting them in a situation like that is discomforting. The TSA has kept many weapons off of airplanes since they started these procedures, but I think they should find a healthier balance between safety and going to far.
I haven't flown since October, 2000. If some security agent treated my wife or daughter the way you describe above, I don't think I could restrain my temper. Watching out for terrorists is important, but in nine years of increasingly intrusive searches of billions of air travelers, TSA has not caught a single terrorist. I wonder: what other methods could we use to deter and catch the bad guys?
