Brain Teasers

Deuel students in the grades kindergarden through the fifth grade have been participating in Destination Imagination, but hopefully next year the middle school will be allowed to participate as well. Destination Imagination is an after school program for younger students who want to try brain twisting challenges and then present them to the Judges at competitions to see how they did. The students meet once a week with their teams to practice problems to get them prepared for tournaments. Any students can be in the program as long as they are willing to commit and have determination. The teams have seven students on each squad.

Mrs. Barbara Miller, the Art teacher at Deuel, takes charge of this after school program, and the parents of the children coach the kids. Miller said she got interested in helping out because she used to teach her girls odyssey when they were young.

To qualify for state, teams must place in either first or second to go. Deuel students did just that at Regionals, held in Aberdeen, and had two teams go to state! State was held on the weekend of the 9th through the 12th in Pierre, South Dakota. One team called The Pineapple Islanders competed in Challenge C and it was called You're Gonna Flip! The team members were Ivy Kolbeck, Sadie Bingham, Brittney Sween, Brittany Knutson, Haley Brown and the two team leaders were Kathy Sween and Denise Brown. The other team was called the Deuel Robots. They tied for fourth place in Challenge B called DI Bots. The team consisted of Reid Hansen, Grady Maaland, Matthew Oeltjenbruns, Morgan Blanset, Mackenzie Kasten, Leah Mack, and Cassie Dahl, along with their leaders Pat and Mary Mack.
