State Wrestling from the 27th and 28th

On Friday and Saturday, the four State Tournament qualifiers from the Deuel High School Wrestling team traveled north to Northern State University in Aberdeen for the 2009 State B State Tournament. The qualifiers were Derek K. (125 pounds), Lance H. (152 pounds), Spencer S. (160 pounds), and Mark S. (171 pounds). Derek had two matches on Friday. The first match was against Lance Shaull from Tea Area and his second match was against Seth McCann from Newell. Shaull pinned Derek in 5:24 and McCann edged Derek out in the second match 11-9. Lance had three matches on Friday. His first matched he lost a tough and close match to Darin Schoenwald from Marion/Freeman 10-8. His second match he defeated Michael Sieler from Lemmon/McIntosh in another good barn-burner match 5-3. In his third and final match of the day, Lance lost to Luke O’Hara from Tri-Valley in a heartbreaker 5-3. Spencer S. also had three matches on Friday. He lost a tough one in his first match to Logan Reuman from Lyman 4-2. Then in his second match he pinned Tony Crackel from Custer in 2:15. But in his final match of the tournament and the year Spencer lost to Brady Bonte from Garretson 6-2. Mark was the only Deuel wrestler to make it in to the second day of wrestling. Mark had four matches in the tournament. In his first match Mark beat Landon Brondsema from Platte/Geddes/Andes Central/Corsica by a major decision 11-3. His second match was also won by a major decision 16-10 over Matt Costello from Harding County. Chad Wieczorek from Stanley County suffered the same fate as the first two as Mark beat him by another major decision 15-5. Marks final match was not as fun to us Deuel fans as Mark lost to Casey Reinesch from Kimball/White Lake 9-2 in the Championship match. Mark ended up with 2nd place in the state tournament for the second year in a row.
