The one sport that I know pays big is football. Football players make more than the president, thats crazy. I don't think our “supposed” to be amazing athletes should be making that much in a single year. One website, I found, said that the average salary in 2010 of a football player was $770,000 a year. Why do we spend all of our money on people who play once a week? Some people say football players get the big bucks because of the hits they get, but thats what they signed up for. We are, in my opinion, wasting our money on people who are doing just a sport.
Let's take a step back here and put some things into perspective. For one thing as a child you don't ever play a sport for money, if anything you are losing money to play a sport. Next a lot of kids, in South Dakota, anyways go to play high school sports. Also, another place where you do get paid to play the sport. You play for the love of the sport, not for a reward of money. I honestly think the professional football players are somewhat greedy. Take Brett Farve, for example, why is he, at age 42, still playing? I honestly don't think he is that good of a player and all he's in it for is the money! I think after retiring twice and coming back people would get the point that he probably would just be in it for the money.
I believe that we shouldn't put our athletes on such a high pedestal. They are honestly just like every other person on the planet. They aren't any more special because they do a sport, we only love them because they can do things we can only dream of doing. The reason we pay such big bucks to see them is because we “love” them and it would break a fans heart to see them go away. It's unbelievable knowing what a fan would pay for. So next time you go to a game just think, do you really need to paying all that money to someone who is just like you only playing the sport you wish you could be playing?
Sam,
ReplyDeleteProfessional athletes are the brunt of many a controversy, especially when it comes to their bank accounts. Do you think that it is the money that they are paid by the teams that is the problem or more the endorsement deals that they earn?
