Your driving down the road you look to your left and you see a homeless woman and her child. Now, you look to your right and see a wealthy, healthy family living in a big, warm house. Some people may think wow that woman needs to get a job and others may feel sorry for her. Some people don't realize homeless people have nowhere to go because they can't get a job or they are physically not able to hold a job. There are about 600,000 homeless people in America at any given time. I, personally, think its terrible that in the middle of winter people are striving to find food and warmth while trying to avoid the police.
I think instead of punishing the homeless people we need to help them. I'm not talking about giving the homeless on the side of the road a ten dollar bill. I'm talking about making programs to put homeless in permanent housing. I'm not saying Extreme Makeover houses; I'm saying an average home where you can live. I think in addition to putting them in permanent housing; we need to help them get on the right path so they don't end up on the streets again.
It's really sad seeing little children in the harsh conditions of South Dakota trying to stay alive. We really need to do something about it. Teachers see students coming to class with a smile on their face, but not realizing they may be sleeping in an ally tonight. One in 50 children are homeless in America today. Most of the homeless children don't appear homeless. There is a total of 1.5 million children in America that are homeless and that number is still rising steadily. Something needs to be done there is no doubt about it.
Many people lose their average, everyday life in the blink of an eye. You can go from attending work to living on the streets in two seconds. With the help of the government and the citizens of the U.S. we should work together to somehow make sure this doesn't happen anymore. Some homeless people have all they need to be successful. They have a high school diploma and a college education, but that one day just brought them down to the bottom where nobody ever wants to be seen.
Most people would never imagine being where they are now. It all happened so quickly that they couldn't do anything about it. Now, they have to rely on begging for food and money to survive.
This is a good article. I think one reason people today don't help those people on the streets is because we don't know who can be trusted. Also do you realize some of those homeless people maybe aren't homeless at all, they just do it to see what they can make from being on the street.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm talking about those people who are really homeless and have no place to go.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really good article and i like your idea of putting them into homes!
ReplyDeleteSam,
ReplyDeleteI understand your concern. I empathize with those who have run into difficult situations, but I often don't know who really needs help and who doesn't. I would recommend looking into helping a shelter like the Women's Resource Center in Watertown or volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, both of which could use assistance.
