NL East Preview

The National League East (NL East) this year will be as wide open and crazy as last year. The NL East was the one of the most interesting divisions in the majors this past season.
The Philadelphia Philles, also the World Series Champions, snuck in at the end again this year. They beat the Mets two years in a row at the end of the year.
The New York Mets were favored to win the division two years in a row and lost it in the last few weeks, or even days of the season.
The Atlanta Braves were the dominators of this division for years but just the last two or three years, have lost their luster. They had a few off-season signings to help this problem though.
The Florida Marlins are always contenders but seem to fall short right at the end of the year. They did this again last year.
The Washington Nationals have really never been contenders in this division but they still bring in the talent every year to try.

I believe that the Mets will finally take this division and go far in the playoffs.

Mustang vs Camaro

Many people have driven passed Ford or Chevy dealerships and have seen the new 2009 Camaro and the new 2009 Mustang. On the outside they are both sports cars but under the hood and in the interior they are completely different sports cars.
The average cost for a 2009 Mustang GT00 is $46,325. The GT500 has a 540 horsepower 5.4L 32-valve supercharger and intercooled V8 engine, which delivers
240 pounds of torque. The 500 has 19 inch wheels and has performance tires on the front and back. Most people tend to like cars that have a good audio system; the GT500 has a shaker 500 Audio System with a sic-disc CD changer, MP3 capability and eight speakers.
The 2009 Camaro has a 400 horsepower 6.2L V8 engine. This delivers 410 pounds of torque at 4300 rpms. The Camaro has six standard airbags to protect from all angles. It is also On-Star equipped to further protect you later on in the event of and accident. The Camaro has a nine speaker, 245-watt Boston Acoustics sound system
If I had to choose between the Camaro and the Mustang, I would choose the Mustang. I would pick the Mustang because I have always wanted a Mustang and because it a more horsepower than the Camaro and it looks really sporty. It also has a bigger sound system than the Camaro.

Weather update around Clear Lake

On Sunday and Monday it was raining pretty hard. We had gotten up to 4 inches of rain. The ditches are full and culverts have flooded over. But are thankful that we haven’t gotten as much rain as Aberdeen. Aberdeen hasn’t had this bad of a flood in over 10 years. This is the worst by far! Moccasin Creek is supposed to be overflowing sometime on Thursday which will threaten homes and businesses. Elm River which is north of Aberdeen has reached record levels of 23 feet from Wednesday morning. Today the water is slowly going down, people are still not in their homes and there is still water sitting in the roads.

Usher vs. Vurt

I think the Usher Cologne made by the singer, and the Vurt Cologne made by skateboarders smell very good. Ushers cologne was released in September 6, 2007. The Vurt cologne was released December 20, 2007. Usher cologne costs $ 64.00 for his 3.4 oz spray. Vurt costs about $19.50 for their 1.7 oz spray. Vurt’s spray looks like a skateboard wheel. Ushers spray comes in a black spray bottle. You can also get the 3 piece gift set when you buy usher, it includes Aftershave, deodorant, and the spray. I personally like the smell of both colognes but for the price of what usher costs I would go with Vurt, because they both smell good, and Vurt isn’t to expensive. Vurt also come in three different fragrances. You can only get Vurt purchase Vurt at Pac sun or online. Usher you buy that at wall mart or online. So if your looking for something that smells good and isn’t very expansive go with Vurt.

Resident Evil 5 Review

Resident evil 5 started out that Chris Redfield was in Africa. He was with the BSAA an organization to stop terrorists. Years before there was an outbreak of a virus called the G virus. Several years after the virus was changed and now is called the Uroboros virus. It had infected almost all of the African people. This caused Chris and sheva to go and hunt out the source of the virus. sheva his new partner questioned his motives for wanting to find out why. His old partner Jill was killed in a fight with his nemesis Wesker Now Wesker had the virus and he wanted to stop him. After finally tracking Wesker down he had a new uprise for Chris. Wesker had used the virus to bring back his former partner Jill. She had the same attributes and fight ability as Wesker but she fought on his side. After they fought with her and administered the virus on her they went to find Wesker The finally found him in a volcano. After a long fought battle they knocked him into the lava and got onto an airplane that Jill was on. The all of a sudden he jumped out of the lava and sheva shot him with a rocket launcher and killed him. The total hours of game play was 30 hours.
The price of this game started at 90 dollars but has went down. It now is at the price of 70 dollars. It was the number one rated game in japan for 2 weeks in a row. In the united states it was rated number 1 and still is. You can buy this game at any best buy, wal mart, target or shop KO stores.
My opinion of the game was that I thought it was kind of short. The other games that they have made were longer than this one. The game play was good but the distance was bad. Overall I thought it was one of the best games they have made in a long time.

K-Swiss Shoes

K-Swiss first started in selling their shoes in stores in the year 1966. Athletes are known to wear these shoes most, because K-Swiss is top seller in sports shoes. K-Swiss's running shoes are at top seller now. Athletes wear proper footwear to support them when they exercise. K-Swiss shoes tend to run from forty dollars to a hundred dollars or more. The largest shoe sizes that K-Swiss makes is size fifteen in mens and size eleven in womens. K-Swiss shoes are available at stores like Footlocker, Tradehome and many other stores. People usually go to Footlocker to get them, but it depends on where you like to go. There are many different styles of K-Swiss shoes like, colorful striped ones or plain white or black ones. The women's K-Swiss Ultra Natural Tennis shoes are priced at $79. 95 and another new pair of shoes that are out are the Women's K-Swiss Konejo which are higher in price at $94. 95. If you compare these two shoes you'll notice that they are both comfortable, but the Konejo shoes are known to last longer. Compared to other shoe companies K-Swiss shoes are awesome shoes, because they are known to be comfortable right when you first put them on. This shows people that K-Swiss is a good brand, because people can walk around with comfort.

In my opinion K-Swiss is a great brand, because I like to run in the summer to keep myself physically active. I have two pairs of running shoes and one is a K-Swiss pair and the other is Nike. I like the K-Swiss pair better, because when I run the shoes support my heals and I don't feel like my feet hurt after I get done running. The soles of the shoes support me really well so its very comforting. I've never bought a pair of shoes from K-Swiss that weren't comfortable.

CDE in DeSmet

On Monday the 23rd all FFA members went to DeSmet for CDE. The FFA members competed in many different subjects. They were Agriculture Business Management, Agriculture Mechanics, Dairy Foods, Livestock, Natural Resources, Nursery Landscape, Agronomy, Horses, and Floriculture. Some of these require a test before competing. Dairy foods require a test first and after the test you judge dairy products and give them a score of one being bad through ten being good. Usually if it’s rated as a ten is considered a good product. Almost every group takes a test, but it depends.

Jacks heart broken in NCAA 2nd round game

The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Lady Jackrabbits had a great game only end in heart-break Tuesday night. The Jacks started on a tear by going up 13 points against the number two seed Baylor Lady bears. The Bears came back to go down by one at halftime 29-28. The Lady Bears only had 13 points that were not free throws the entire first half. The second half was as back and forth as it could get. The Lady Bears did not get their first lead until one minute remaining in the ball game.

The Jacks took control every second up until then. The game was tied 54-54 when Kelli Griffin from Baylor, made a shot with one minute remaining to take the lead 56-54. Then the Lady Jacks got the ball to the Summit League Player of the Year, and the most important player for the Jacks all season, Jennifer Warkenthein who shot the ball but got fouled in the process. She sank both of her free throws to tie it again at 56-56. Then the most controversial call of the night and possibly of the year happened with a little over 30 seconds to go.

Rachael Allison from Baylor was hurt with about five minutes left in the game and she was forced to go to the locker room with a bad knee. Then she came back to play with a minute to go in the game. Allison got fouled by Warkenthein and would have had to shoot free throws because of the foul situation. But, there is a little known rule that players can be substituted if injured on the play. The thing that was controversial about it was Allison was not hurt on the play she was fouled. But since she had the injury almost five minutes before, the referees let the Bears substitute for Whitney Zachariason. She made the first one and missed the second to make it 57-56. The Bears made a free throw and the Jacks made a two to make it 58-58. With 7.8 seconds left the Bears had the ball.

They gave the ball to their Big 12 all-conference guard, Kelli Griffin who drove and made a, “prayer,” 2 pointer with .5 seconds remaining. The Jacks could not get the ball inbounded and ended up losing the most exciting game in the tournament. Jennifer Warkenthein led the Lady Jackrabbits with 18 points and Griffin led the Lady Bears with 21 points.

Frankenstein novel/ blogs

Both of the senior english classes started reading Frankenstein on Monday. Mrs. Walder had them do a blog on what you know about Frankenstein. On Monday, they did a crossword puzzle about the book and the author. Mrs. Walder said, "There are study guides, projects, and at the end of the novel we will be watching the film and doing a comparison with the novel."

Walder also said, "This will help us in the future by reading comprehension will be useful in any career field that students choose. For example, if a student is going to be a mechanic, they will need to read manuals or magazines to learn about the new cars that are coming out. They will need to know how they operate and how to repair them also." Frankenstein is a novel that stretches students' imaginations to think about what could be in the world of science, biology, and medicine. Students also think about the power that humans may one day attain over birth and death. Walder said the seniors read a novel to expose students to another culture, learn literary devices used by the author and practice reading comprehension strategies.

Garnier Fructis vs. Aussie

If you’re going through the shampoo aisle with your shopping cart, which shampoo do you choose— Aussie or Garnier Fructis? Both of these products are hair care brands which include shampoo.
Garnier Fructis claims to make your hair stronger, smoother, and shinier. Aussie helps with dry and damaged hair by making it moist. The ingredients in Garnier Fructis are all natural ingredients while in Aussie they’re not. Garnier Fructis contains ingredients like, coco and other fruits.
There have been both good and bad reviews for both products. People like the smell of both products. Garnier Fructis has a fruity smell, and Aussie has a kind of grape scent to it. After using Garnier Fructis, people have complained about hair loss and thought it made their hair dry. People who have used Aussie have said that it’s dried out their hair and also made it greasy.
For the most part though, there are more positive things about Aussie than there are about Garnier Fructis. Lexi Quail said, “I have used both, but I now use Aussie, and like it much better.” Dalton DeBoer said, “I like Garnier Fructis better, because it leaves my hair silky and smooth.”
Many people buy these products, or have at least once to try them out. You can get them at pretty much any store. For an example you could buy them at your local grocery stores, and of course at Wal-Mart. Also they’re both available online to buy. Both of these products have an average price of $4, so you’re not really going to be able to use that as a way to compare the two.
I have tested out both shampoos, but I prefer to use Aussie. I found better reviews about it than Garnier Fructis, and I like the smell of it better. Also I believe Aussie leaves my hair shinier, and stays nice throughout the whole day.

Princess vs. Clinique Happy

Are you looking to by perfume, but just can’t seem to find the right one?
Princess by Vera Wang and Happy Clinique are two great smelling perfumes! But the question is which one do you choose? Princess is found in Sephora and a 1.7 oz bottle costs $57. Shipping and handling for this product will cost you $5.95 for standard shipping. You can buy a 1.7 oz bottle of Clinique Happy for $39.50. Clinique Happy can be bought in Macy’s. Standard shipping and handling also cost $5.95, but that does not include tax.
According to macys.com, Clinique Happy has gotten a 99% approval rate by the people who have purchased it and it has also gotten 4.5 stars out of 5. The only down falls of this product would be its rather strong and the scent doesn’t last very long. People who have purchased Princess say that it last all day and they get many compliments on how they smell. Briana DeBoer said, “I prefer Princess because when I wear it I feel like I have a strong scent that people take notice to. Also, it lasts all day!” Princess is in a heart shaped glass bottle with a crown on the top for the lip. Clinique Happy is in a plain clear bottle with an orange lip.
I personally think that Princess by Vera Wang is the right perfume to choose. I love the scent because it’s not overpowering and has a sweet smell and the appearance of the bottle is adorable! It may be a little more expensive but its definitely worth that extra 20 bucks.

Crest vs. Aquafresh

There are a lot of toothpastes out there, but today I’m going to tell you about two. I will be reviewing Aquafresh White & Shine to Crest Whitening toothpastes. I will tell you how they are different from each other and how they are the same.
Crest Whitening fights cavities and visible tartar build-up. This toothpaste whitens and polishes away surface stains. A person on one view point.com gave this toothpaste three stars out of five. A pros on the product is that the toothpaste does whiten your teeth, a con on this product is that is to watery. Crest whitening leaves your teeth feeling slick and smooth, and it leaves your breath smelling nice. On dentist.net, this product costs $1.50.
Aquafresh White & Shine fights plaque, it leaves your breath fresh. The gel cleans, polishes, and whitens teeth. The toothpaste costs $3.99. This toothpaste keeps your gums healthy and clean. Some users say that this product burns your tongue, and it is a little pricey. Some pros on this toothpaste are that it whitens your teeth and keeps your teeth clean.
I think if I had you choose one of these toothpastes, I would choose Crest Whitening. I really like this toothpaste; it cleans your teeth and leaves your mouth refreshed. It whitens your teeth and fights cavities.

Alltel vs. Verizon

Have you ever wondered which cell phone company is better and more affordable? A consumer review is a story that demonstrates a product, tells some characteristics of the product, and can compare two companies or products.

Alltel and Verizon are both cell phone companies that have a lot of differences. According to alltel.com, Alltel has national plans, local plans, individual and family plans, voice and data plans, and also the pre-paid plan. The national plan costs $59.99 a month and 900 anytime minutes. The local plan ranges in cost from $39.99 to $199.99 and ranges on anytime minutes from 700 to 6500 minutes. The individual plan range in cost from $39.99 to $84.99 a month. The family plan costs $84.99 a month and 1000 anytime minutes. The voice and data plan costs $89.99 a month and 500 anytime minutes. The pre-paid plan costs 75 cents a day plus 10 cents a day. Cyanthia Tongen thinks Alltel is better than Verizon.

Alltel has this program called MyCircle where you have the choose of adding any 5, 10, or 20 numbers to your cell phone plan. Verizon copied Alltel's MyCircle plan.

According to verizonwireless.com, they have plans like individual plans, prepaid plans, 65 plus, and family plans. The individual plan ranges in cost from $59.99 to $99.99 a month and starting at 450 anytime minutes. The family plan range in cost from $89.99 to $159.99 a month and starting at 700 anytime minutes. The prepaid plan to talk it is $3.99 a day and to text it is 1 cent a day. The 65 plus plan pay one flat rate for all voice calls and it it 1 cent a month for every call and text message.

I would choose Alltel Wireless because I have it right now and I have never had Verizon Wireless company. Although I don't pay the cell phone bill, I think Alltel is better than Verizon. If I was paying the bill, I'd choose the individual plan because it would just be me on a plan, so that would be easier for me. I just got unlimited texting like a couple of weeks ago which costs $19.99 a month. That is why I would choose Alltel Wireless.

Lady Jackrabbits clobber Horned Frogs in first ever NCAA tourney game

The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Jackrabbit women entered Lubbock, Texas, the site of their first ever NCAA National Tournament game, hoping to show everyone in the nation what they could do. Sunday night they did exactly that.
“I got home with about six minutes gone and it was 33-8,” fan Mike Dahl said. The Jacks hit 16 three-point baskets to tie a school record and a NCAA tournament game record. They ended up winning the game 90-55 to move on and face the Baylor Lady Bears in the second round.
The Jackrabbit women got, “shafted,” on most thoughts by getting a number seven seed which was a rather high seed for them to get. Most people believed they would get a five or a six, possibly even a four seed. They gave the NCAA selection committee a, “kick in the mouth,” by beating number 10 seed Texas Christian University (TCU ) by 45 points.
The second round game against Baylor is 29-28 Jackrabbit advantage at halftime. More to come on that game tomorrow.

DNA molecules

In Mrs. Schiefelbein’s 10th grade Biology class students made a model of DNA molecules out of paper. When everyone is done making them they will hook them together and place them somewhere around her room. When they are done making them they will twist it to make a double helix. The students learn that DNA is a molecule that makes up genes and determines the traits of all living things. These models are to explain to the students how DNA looks and to explain how it does its job.

March 4th CDE

On March 4th the FFA members went to CDE in Tri-Valley. CDE took place in the Tri-Valley high school. They had six different categories the students could judge. The categories are Farm Business Management, Horse Evaluation, Dairy Cattle Evaluation, Livestock Evaluation, Natural Resources, and Floriculture. The FFA teamed place really well in Tri-Valley, Ag Business placed 2nd with Jared Schilling placed 1st individually, and Brian Niemann placed 7th individually in Dairy Cattle, Horse Evaluation placed 4th or 5th with Nicole Pederson place 6th individually and Michelle Pederson placing 11th individually.

Today in Senior Economics and English

Today in the Senior Economics and English Mr. Scheirnbeck, Mrs. Walder, and Mrs. Schwenn talked to us about improvements on our interviews that we gave on Monday and Tuesday. We talked about how to improve handshakes, how to sit, and clothing in an interview. Handshakes are supposed to be firm and short. Improvements on how to sit in an interview are by not slouching, if you’re a girl cross your ankles. Improvements on clothing are guys tuck in the shirts, wear dress pants not jeans, and girls less cleavage showing. Three awards were given out to three outstanding interviews which are Taylor Toben, Nathan Drake, and Ariane Santos.

Sophomore I Believe Speech

In sophomore English we did an ‘I Believe’ speech to state what we are passionate about. We performed the speeches on Monday the 16th, and Tuesday the 17th. People did their speeches on things like going to college, having a dance team, and banding smoking in public places. The students were told to talk about their speeches and tell why they believe in that topic. The speech was supposed to be three to four minutes long.

Tasha Gniffke did her speech on how everyone should go to college. Her reason for this was because college graduates earn 35% more income than high school diploma holders. She thinks that speeches are good to do, because they teach people about how to speak in front of a group of people.

Senior Interviews/ Senior Projects

The seniors had projects for English and Economics. They have been working on them since February 2, 2009. The Seniors were interviewed by Mrs. Schwenn or Mrs. Walder, Mr. Schiernbeck, Mr. Benson, Greg Petersen, and Matt Hotzler, Sr. The interviews were on Monday, March, 16 &17, 2009 in the DDN Room. Some of the seniors experienced a interview for the first time in their life. It probably won't be their last either. Taylor Hotzler said, “honestly, I think I did really terrible. I couldn't pronounce my words and I felt like I was getting questioned for murder on my interview.” Alexia Kloos said, “the hardest question I had to answer was why would I be the best person for the job.”

Most of the interviews varied in length it depended on how long your answers were. If they answered a question with a short answer, then it probably took longer. If they answered a question with a long answer, then it was probably shorter. Chris DeBaere said, “I thought the question about my greatest achievement was the hardest question to answer.” Some of the seniors were nervous. “Yes, I was a little nervous for the interview,” said Alexia Kloos.

SDSU Women number 7 seed in NCAA Tournament

For the first time in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) history, a South Dakota basketball team is going to the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament. The Summit League champion South Dakota State University (SDSU) Jackrabbit women’s basketball team is a number seven seed team in the NCAA tournament.

The women were predicted to be either a five or a six seed but ended up with a seven. I also believed the girls deserved better but I also realize that SDSU is a small school and no one really cares if a small school is treated fairly or not. The thing that made me most upset was they have to play Texas Christian University (TCU) in Lubbock, Texas. This is very close to their hometown and I think that is unfair for the lady Jacks.

The game will start at 6 p.m. on Sunday at United Spirit Arena on the Campus of Texas Tech University. The game can be seen on ESPN2, http://www.espn360.com/ and on the free live web-cast on http://www.gojacks.com/. The game will also be on four local radio stations. These stations are 910 AM KJJQ out of Brookings, 570 AM WNAX out of Yankton, 1480 AM KSDR out of Watertown, and 103.1 FM KJAM out of Madison. If the Jacks win they will play the winner of the Baylor vs. Texas-San Antonio game.

AL East

This year the American League East looks very tough. In my opinion, it is the toughest division in baseball. Last year the AL East sent the most surprising team in the MLB to the World Series.
This team was the Tampa Bay Rays. For those of you who kind of know baseball but not really, they were the Devil Rays and the worst team in the league for years, then came out of no where to win the AL East and the AL Pennant.
The Boston Red Sox won the Wild Card which is the fourth team who gets into the playoffs. They were predicted to get the Wild Card but not behind the Rays.
The team that was supposed to win the AL East and win it all for the matter was the New York Yankees. The Yankees were the biggest disappointment in the year mostly because their key players kept getting hurt.
The Toronto Blue Jays have always been a decent team, but they can never keep up with the front-runners in their division. The Blue Jays were just three games behind the Yankees for third place.
The Baltimore Orioles have not been in the top three in the division in at least 10 years. This year was no different for the Orioles as the finished 28.5 games behind the Rays for first.
This year, as much as it hurts me to say it, I believe the Yankees will win the AL East. They added a lot of high priced talent and should be the best team in baseball if healthy. I also think that the Red Sox will again get the Wild Card.

BuffPuff Volleyball

Thursday, after school, something quite unusual happened. Three teams of all boys played volleyball to be crowned, “BuffPuff Volleyball 2009 Champions.” The boys have been ready for this even for several weeks. The Juniors had there own shirts made and they’ve had them for well over a month and a half. “Dude, we are going to dominate. I’m pumped,” Spencer S. said. The other two teams were not as enthused but still ready to fight for the championship. There were only three teams because the Freshman forfeited because they did not have enough players.
The first match was the most anticipated game of the two. The game was between the Seniors and the Juniors. The first game of the match looked like a flop and a blow-out. The Juniors jumped to a 5-0 then a 7-2 lead. Then, with the help of ace server, Travis V., the Seniors cam back and tied the game 8-8. The game was tied all the way through the 15-15 point. The rules are go to 15 and win by two. But the game was tied, so they went farther. The Juniors won the game 19-17 in a first game thriller. The second game started the same as the first. The Seniors went down 8-3 then came back and made the score 12-10 in favor of the Juniors. The Juniors went on to win 15-12 to send the Seniors home empty handed.
The next game meant redemption for the Seniors as they took on the Sophomores. The Sophomores looked like they were primed for an upset as they started up 8-0. “What are we doing?!” Lance H. said. So with that in mind, the Seniors turned it around and won the game 15-13. “How did that happen?” Tyson R. said. He said it in disgust because of the large lead the Sophomores let slip through their fingers. The second game the Seniors did not need as large of a come-back because they only started down 4-0 then won the game pretty handily 15-9. The Seniors ended their night 1-1 and in second place.
The third and final game of the night was between the Juniors and the Sophomores. The Juniors struggled with the pesky Sophomores but took them both games. The Juniors won the Second Annual 2009 BuffPuff Tournament Championship by going 2-0 and winning some close and interesting games along the way. “I guess I don’t care too much that we lost, I had fun anyway,” Mark Sherman said.

Standings:
1. Juniors 2-0
2. Seniors 1-1
3. Sophomores 0-2
4. Freshman ---

Eighth Grade Exploratory Classes

The eighth grade students are taking exploratory classes. These classes include Drivers Education, Reading, Industrial Arts, and Agriculture. They switch classes every nine weeks. These classes are new this year, because they wanted to put Driver’s Education in the curriculum. The teachers for these classes are Mrs. Walder, Mrs. Eggers, Mrs. Tvedt, Mr. Karels, and Mr. Tvedt. These classes help the students explore the options that high school has for them.

The industrial arts teacher; Mr. Tvedt said, “My favorite part of teaching this class is the excitement and interest with this age level of students.” As of now this class is working on their CO 2 dragsters and getting them ready to compete to see who has made the fastest car in the eighth grade.

High School Student of the Month.

One of this months Student of the Month is sophomore Caitlyn Brandt. She wasn't trying to become Student of the Month she just was chosen to be one of the lucky people. She doesn't know the process of how teachers pick the Student of the Month, but she does know that you have to be a good student, and you have to be good at what you do. This isn't Caitlyn's first time being Student of the Month, she was last year too. Some advice that Caitlyn wants the kids that will be a freshman next year is to "Always do the best you can, it gets you far in life."

HS Student of the Month

HS Student of The Month
This month Mark Sherman was one of the students of the month. This is his first time being student of the month. When I asked him what he thought of being student of the month he said,” I never expected I would ever get the opportunity to bestow this honor”. In his opinion some of the benefits are bragging rights and also receive a pizza for lunch. His favorite part of being student of the month is getting the parking spot. His least favorite part of being it is that people steal is parking spot.
When he gets out of school he plans to attend either Northern State University or University of Sioux Falls and major in business. A profession that he wants to do when he gets older is he would like to own his own business. Right now he doesn’t have any part time or full time jobs. Some of the sports that he participates in are football and wrestling. He is also active in Student Council, Key Club, and Theater.

Play tryouts

National League West Preview

Last year, the National League West (NL West) was known as the bottom-dweller, or the laughing stock of the Major League. I foresee this year differently for the NL West because some of the teams who struggled should thrive in 2009.
The Las Angeles Dodgers won the division by two games last season, but it really was never that close. The Arizona Diamondbacks made a late charge in the last 10 games of the season but by that time L.A. had already clinched the division.
The aforementioned Diamondbacks had a relatively decent year but would have been better if their key players could have stayed healthy. The Colorado Rockies followed up a surprising 2007 season with a very disappointing 2008 campaign. They ended up 10 games behind the Dodgers and had a record under .500. This means they did not win 50% of their games.
The San Francisco Giants, to me, had the most disappointing season in the NL West. They had a Cy Young Award winner, Tim Lincecum, and their pitching was still not enough to help them out. A Cy Young Award is the award that goes to the best pitcher in the league. The worst team in this league was the San Diego Padres. They finished with a 63-99 record and it is not looking good for this year again.
I picked the Dodgers to repeat this year as N.L. West champs but it is a tough decision over the Giants. The Giants acquired Randy Johnson in the off-season and, on paper, the pitching rotation looks stout. The way I see it, the order would look like this: Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Rockies, and Padres.

Dr. Seuss' Birthday

All the Preschool thru fifth grade gathered in the big gym on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 2:45 to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. Mrs. Tekrony said, "First we sang a song, told some riddles, read The Foot Book and the students did the actions, the teachers acted out Green Eggs and Ham, sang and did the action to La Seuss, and finished with singing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss."

"Watching the kids do the action and sing La Seuss and the skit that the teacher did with Green Eggs and Ham was the funniest part. In some of the classroom the teacher read different Dr. Seuss books, did different Dr. Seuss activities, and Preschool did Wacky Wednesday and read the book," said Tekrony. The Elementary staff try to at least two of these programs a year. They did one for Halloween and now the Dr. Seuss.

MLB season Preview- AL West

With sports done for a little while i thought i need something to fill in for when there are no sporting events for me to write about. So i thought i would talk about the MLB, or Major League Baseball. I will talk about one division every week so this week i chose the American League West. Last year, the Las Angeles Angels of Aneheim ran away with the division and the best record in the American League. But this year i predict it will be much closer than last year. The Oakland A's have every key player back from last year and they are young so they will not get burned out like older players tend to at the end of the season. The Texas Rangers will even be better as they did not lose any main player to free angency and will be a contender for the first time in many years. I believe the Seattle Mariners will still be in the cellar of the division, though, just because they have two or maybe three good players and they just are not ready to contend this year. But my prediction still remains with the Angels winning the division.

Gender Equity Day

On Wednesday, March 4th we had Gender Equity Day which is a day where we picked two nontraditional careers and one traditional career and learned about them. This was just to see what opportunities we have when we graduate high school, also to see if we want to pursue a nontraditional career.
The careers I picked to learn about was Agriculture, Automotive technician, and Physical Therapy Assistant. Each one had a lot to offer. In the agriculture class we talked about using a GPS to measure acreage and how to tell if corn is good or bad. In automotive technician class we learned about spark plugs on a car and we also worked on a car battery. In physical therapy assisting class we learned about the differences in everyones strength and also we talked about stress relievers.
When I went to Lake Area Tech I learned that no matter what sex you are you can pursue what you want and still really enjoy it. I also learned that some careers you could possibly want to pursue are harder than you think. This experience was very fun and very helpful to us sophomores and after that day I think people have realized if they really want to pursue that career.

Boys Basketball from the 3rd

On Tuesday, the Deuel boys basketball team hosted the Duebrook Dolphins for the first round of districts. This game was everything anyone hoped and wanted it to be. The Cardinals came out with a bang as they had an 11 point lead at the end of the 1st. The boys keeped their hot grove going as they had a nine point lead at half-time. Duebrook, though, was just starting. They shot better than 70% in the 3rd quarter and it was down to a two point lead for our boys. The game ended in disappointment for our Deuel side as the Dolphins came on late and defeated our guys 43-42 to end the Deuel boys season rather ubruptly.

Girls Basketball from Feb. 27th

On Friday, the Deuel girls team traveled to Brookings to take on bitter rival Sioux Valley at the Swiftel Center. The girls had high hopes going all through the season and it lead up to this moment. The game was close at the end of the first quarter, but Sioux Valley pulled ahead and led by nine at half-time. The Cossacks never looked back from that point on. They led by 11 after the third quarter. The final score of the game was 55-45, Sioux Valley would move on to play in the Region game on Thursday in Webster. "The girls just couldn't get the shots to go," fan Landon Krause said. The Deuel girls basketball team ended with a 17-4 record overall on the season.

The All State Band is a prestigious honor for those chosen. Out of the 667 students that auditioned, Deuel High School Senior Ross Effling was chosen for his great work with his euphonium. He was picked out of 667 students and now gets to go to the South Dakota Bandmasters Association (SDBA). Band Instructor Jolene Krause said, “Ross is going to use this experience to audition for a music scholarship at SDSU.”

State Wrestling from the 27th and 28th

On Friday and Saturday, the four State Tournament qualifiers from the Deuel High School Wrestling team traveled north to Northern State University in Aberdeen for the 2009 State B State Tournament. The qualifiers were Derek K. (125 pounds), Lance H. (152 pounds), Spencer S. (160 pounds), and Mark S. (171 pounds). Derek had two matches on Friday. The first match was against Lance Shaull from Tea Area and his second match was against Seth McCann from Newell. Shaull pinned Derek in 5:24 and McCann edged Derek out in the second match 11-9. Lance had three matches on Friday. His first matched he lost a tough and close match to Darin Schoenwald from Marion/Freeman 10-8. His second match he defeated Michael Sieler from Lemmon/McIntosh in another good barn-burner match 5-3. In his third and final match of the day, Lance lost to Luke O’Hara from Tri-Valley in a heartbreaker 5-3. Spencer S. also had three matches on Friday. He lost a tough one in his first match to Logan Reuman from Lyman 4-2. Then in his second match he pinned Tony Crackel from Custer in 2:15. But in his final match of the tournament and the year Spencer lost to Brady Bonte from Garretson 6-2. Mark was the only Deuel wrestler to make it in to the second day of wrestling. Mark had four matches in the tournament. In his first match Mark beat Landon Brondsema from Platte/Geddes/Andes Central/Corsica by a major decision 11-3. His second match was also won by a major decision 16-10 over Matt Costello from Harding County. Chad Wieczorek from Stanley County suffered the same fate as the first two as Mark beat him by another major decision 15-5. Marks final match was not as fun to us Deuel fans as Mark lost to Casey Reinesch from Kimball/White Lake 9-2 in the Championship match. Mark ended up with 2nd place in the state tournament for the second year in a row.
