Girls basketball from the 24th

On Tuesday the girls hosted the first round district game against the Deubrook Dolphins. Previously this year the girls defeated the Dolphins by 15 points at Duebrook. The Dolphins were looking for revenge as the game was close the whole way through the game. Our girls were up in the first quarter by one and down by one at half time. But then our girls pushed and led at the end of the 3rd 48-38. They kept fighting and they did not let the upset minded Dolphins get the best of them. The Deuel Cardinal girls moved on defeating the Duebrook Dolphins again 64-49. The leading scorer was Jenna V. as she score 27 points. The girls will take on Sioux Valley for the District Championship Game at the Swiftel Center on Friday.

Wrestling from the 21st

On Saturday, the Deuel wrestling team traveled up north to Redfield for the region 1B tournament. The top four place winners in each bracket would move on to the State B Wrestling tournament in Aberdeen. The wrestlers got 6th place as a team with a team score of 70 points. Deuel had four placers that would move on to the State tournament. Derek K. got 4th place to move on in the 125 lb bracket. Lance H. will move on to state in the 152 lb catagory with his 2nd place finish. Spencer S. also earned 2nd place in his 160 lb bracket to move on to state. Mark S. kept his roll going on Saturday, winning his 171 lb region bracket. The state tourney will start at 10:00 on Friday at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.

Boys Basketball from the 23rd

On Monday the boys had their final regular season game at home against the Redfield Pheasants. Redfield is a NEC rival and every game since I have been in high school has been close and fun to watch. This year the Cardinals were looking to take care of business, but the young and determined Pheasants team gave our boys all they could handle. The Cards ended up pulling it off winning 54-50. Chance O. was the leading scorer in this game with 19 points. The boys will host the first round district game against Deubrook. This will be a revenge game for the Deuel boys because they lost a 61-57 overtime game against the Dolphins earlier in the year. The game will start at 7:00 on Tuesday at the Cardinal (big) gym in Clear Lake.

Update on Spark

Spark has been working just fine. Everyone been using spark to communicate with other classmates. We used spark today in our American History class to do a discussion on some videos we watched. Spark was easy and quick to use to answer questions and give our opionons on the war videos. The instant messenger chat has been used by everybody and is working just fine. Its really nice to use spark to get a hold of someone that is possibly busy in a classroom with a student or just haveing a class period. I asked a few students and they said they like spark, because they use it to communicate with their buddies. So that s the update on spark.

Boys Basketball from the 12th, 14th, and 17th

Last Thursday, the boys traveled to Clark for a big NEC battle. The boys were on the up rise from the big win against rival Sioux Valley and were out to prove it wasn't a fluke. The boys came up huge as they won on Clarks home turf 46-44. The next test was against bitter rival, and LCC rival, Castlewood. Back when I was in middle school there was a time where we never thought we'd beat Castlewood. They were always close games but they never turned out to our side. Now the tides have seemed to turn. Over the last few years it has been our boys on the right side of the coin. The boys won in a 47-43 typical rivalry game. On Tuesday another NEC titan came to town, Milbank. Now people were saying that Milbank is down this year and it's true, but not down enough to lose by 19 to a team theyve beaten almost 10 years in a row. Our boys took care of business in a big way 61-42. The final regular season game is tomorrow as the boys have another NEC matchup against Redfield right here at home

One- Act Travels to Play

Today the people who were in the One-act play went to see "To Kill a Mocking Bird." They have to be back in time for conferences but other than that they are supposed to have fun. I will be getting a follow up on this so that we can see what the play was about and what they thought was good and bad about it.
The students were able to travel to the play through a grant from the South Dakota Arts Council. The grant covered half of the transportation costs.

Out of Class Reading by: Brooke and Tasha

The sophomores in Mrs. Walder’s English class are presenting their out of class reading assignments. We talked to Hillary Lopez, Brock Hanten, and Alyssa Becht about what they are doing for their book reports. Hillary read the Buddha’s Diamonds. She said, “The most interesting part of the book is when the boy wants to take responsibilities for his family.” Alyssa Becht read Danger in the Shadows. Her book report is in a conflict and resolution form. She said, “I really love all the characters in my book.” She also said, “Presenting makes us more comfortable in front of our peers and public speaking.” Brock Hanten read Halo: The Cole Protocol. For his presentation he did a “wanted” poster. Brock said, “The action and fighting scenes are very detailed and fun to read.” This book is part of a series. We all learn from this that is good to do this in front of the class because it makes us less nervous and worried when we give speeches or talk in groups of people.

The Century Farms Project By Zack Howell and Kylie Nielsen

American history class and Mr Trautman's 4th grade class working on century farms project

This project is where Members of Deuel County that own a Century Farm were invited to speak to Mrs. Schwenn's American History classes and Mr. Trautman's 4th grade class. Students will be interviewing the farm owners and learning about how they came to live in SD, what life was like on the farm, and how things have changed over the years. After the interview, the history students will be writing an article based on the interview and the 4th graders will be drawing pictures to go with the articles. The interview days are being sponsored by the Design SD: Rural Development Project, assisted by Briana Hoffman. Over the course of two days, 14 people came in to tell their stories.
It deals with American history by telling the history of how people came and settled in South Dakota is just one of the parts of the American experience. For example, it has been interesting to hear about how the Homestead Act had a lasting affect in the local people of Deuel County. They are doing this to help educate current American History students and to share their stories with the larger community through the project. They are called century farms because they have existed for over a century, 100 years. Both of Ms Schwenn’s American history classes are involved in this project and Mr. Trautman’s 4th grade class.

Parent Teacher Conferences

On Thursday, February 19 there will be Parent Teacher conferences from 3:30 until 9:00. The students will be dismissed at 3: 10 that day to allow teachers to get there papers in order and get set up in the Cardinal gym. The purpose of the conferences are to allow the parents to ask the teacher about what they have been working on and to check up on there child’s grades. The parents can also see what it is that they can do to help there child in school to improve there grades. When the parents arrive they will be handed a grade report for the first half of the third quarter.

Mundt Debate Results

Coach Heather Schwenn, Kjirstin Almos, and Kyle Pederson went to a debate tournament in Madison, SD at the high school and also Dakota State University (DSU). The tournament started on February 13 and it ended on the 14. This tournament is done in honor of Karl E. Mundt was a South Dakota native who became a Senator and Representative. He helped co-found the National Forensic League (NFL). The main reason this was in honor of Mundt mostly because of his advocacy for debate and speech programs in high school. "In oratory, I received rankings of 4 and 1, and in debate, I had a record of 4-1," said Kjirstin Almos. Kyle Pederson competed in drama and received rankings of 2 and 4.
"Even though we are an A school, we compete against the best of the best from Sioux Falls, Watertown, Brookings, etc., so yes, it's fair to say that we have hard competition. We also are not separated by ability; in other words, you may be a sophomore competing against a senior," said Almos. There was close to twenty different schools there, but the number of actual competitors depended on the event.

Stimulus Package

I think that the stimulus package is a good idea. I think that by doing this it may help our economy not be so bad. By giving away this money it can open up new doors and get our counrty out of the slump we're into today. Obama plans to create 2.5 million new jobs by 2011.

Dakota state writing tests

The Dakota Writing test is an evaluation tool to assess students writing performance. The assessment contains prompts in four modes: descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive that elicits a rough-draft response from the student. The State of South Dakota mandates Grades 5, 7, and 10 be assessed. The Dakota Writing test gives us as teachers a measurement on how the student does in six basic areas, The areas being Ideas and Development, Organization and Coherence, Word Choice, Sentence and Paragraphs, Grammar and Usage, and Writing Mechanics. The window for testing across South Dakota is February 23-27, and at Duel they will be given either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. These tests are not timed but would take approximately 50 minutes. We as a district have chosen them to be given during the students regular English class time. All public schools in SD are required to take the Writing Assessment. The Dakota Writing test has existed for a number of years but has changed names, and forms over the years. The results are used to compare and look at our English/Language Arts curriculum and see if there are any of the six areas we need to improve in. This can be done of changing or adding to our curriculum or spending more class time focusing on weakness.

Boy's Baaketball Ice Cream Serving

Tonight at the game in the Middle School concession stand, they will be selling SDSU ice cream at half time and in between games. The team is doing this to raise money for summer camps. Whoever is at the game come buy some it is $2. 50. SDSU is sponsoring it for the Boy's Basketball team.

Stimulus Package

President Obama is going to Denver to sign $787-billon Stimulus package today. I think the stimulus package is something good for the US. A lot of people are struggling to pay there bill and taxes. The stimulus package will help a lot of people in the future it will help car buyers and home buyers, so when they first buy a car or house they won’t loss it right away. It will help the people of the United States. It will help the people that don’t have jobs, and it will help the economy.

Stimulus Package

Barack Obama reveled that they are putting in a almost 1 trillion dollar economic stimulus package. Obama said yesterday that with in the next year the economy is going to worsen. The economic crisis is so great that Obama and his economic team now believe that nothing less than the stimulus package is needed. Obama refused to put a cost on the plan, but senior Democrats are talking about 700 billion dollars. with others saying up to 1 trillion. When he met the nation’s governors last week he was told that there was $136 billion worth of building projects on the state level ready to go if federal money was made available.
I think that it is a good idea because our economy is struggling. It is going to keep struggling if so meting is not done. I believe that this is what needs to be done to help the economy. Obama may be the most successful president the fastest. Once the money is put in I think that the economy is going to get better faster.

Stimulus Package

Obama is signing the multibillion dollar Stimulus Package today. The Package is a way to help the economy in the United States. I think it will help us to begin with, but then it will slowly go downhill. The Stimulus Package, which will give between $675 billion and $775 billion. I think that will work until the government runs out of money and then we are in the Great Depression, again. Obama wants to create 3 million jobs. I don't think that will happen, but you still don't know for sure.

Stimulus Package

President Barrack Obama is signing a stimulus bill in Denver, Colorado for 787 billion dollars. Stimulus package can help homeowners and this plan will also allow bankruptcy judges to write down a mortgage principal rather than interest rates.

I think that this plan is very great because lots of people are struggling and suffering and we need this to prevent the U.S. from going so bankrupt where we can’t fix it. It’s good for people of the United States. It will help the economy as well. That’s what we need most. Governors have to balance their budgets each year. It’s a lot of compromise with state legislators to get this working. I think its going to help those that are loosing their jobs and that’s another reason why I think its going to work.

Stimulus Package Opinion

I think that the stimulus package is a good thing. Since our economy is in tough shape, we need something to keep people positive. I believe this might encourage people to start buying again. We need that, otherwise eventually no one will be able to keep their businesses going. Also it will help create more jobs.

Stimulus Package

I think that the stimulus package is a good idea. The stimulus package is worth $787 billion, that will help alot of people in the future. It will help first time home buyers so they wont have to forclose on there houses right after they buy them. The money will also help keep certain componies from going bankrupt. Then they are give money to the poor children across the country. An agreement form for the U.S. would give $15 billion to $20 billion fresh capital to the Bank of America Corp.

Stimulus Package

The stimulus package that is supposed to be signed today, is going to be used for helping the families that really need the help. This is a $787 billion dollar stimulus package. Now people that are trying to buy a house or a car can get a tax deduction. The package is raising for married couples and help the unemployed. Most people with no jobs aren't worried about paying taxes but you shouldn't think like that. Any one who has not had a paycheck should still have to pay taxes but only if you are over the age of 18. You will need to find different ways of paying for all of it but you get a tax deduction on this also.

My opinion on all of this is that its great for some families but for the rest its not fair. Everyone needs to have a tax date and has got to pay to get money back! You earn that money from working very hard! Some people want to change it from being where you have to spend all of the money for those who have to have food stamps and for those who have a special disability, they need to spend the money with in 60 days of getting it. I would think the Govt. would want you to save it so that when everything does go wrong, you will have some "Mad Money."

Girls Basketball from the 13th and the 16th

On Friday the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones came to Cardinal country to take on our number 3 in the state Deuel Cardinals. Clark/Willow lake was also the number 9 team in the state as well. This game was a, "good ol' fashioned NEC battle," said Clark Toben about the game later. After the first quarter the Cardinals had a commanding 17-9 lead. But at the end of the 4th it was tied 58-58. In the end the Cyclones were too much for the Cardinals. They ended up losing 64-67 in overtime. Jenna V. and Jayda S. both had 17 points to lead the Deuel girls. On Monday the girls went down south to DeSmet to play the Lady Bulldogs. The girls seemed to have no trouble with their LCC foe. They defeated DeSmet 64-34. The girls record is 15-3 and is first in their district. The girls have their final game at home against Redfield on Friday night.

Valentine's Day

Valentines Day is on February 14th, the day in which love is spread around for one another. It’s usually a holiday best known for its cards, because of all the joy and laughter it brings to people. Sometimes people have a tendency to send singing cards to people or write a song or a poem for them or even buy them some jewelry. It really just depends on the type of person you are. Lots of people make valentines and send them to soldiers for all the work they do to protect our country.

I talked to sophomore Tasha Gniffke about her opinions are on Valentines Day. Tasha said, “This holiday means telling a person that you love them.” She usually gives her mom and dad a card or something nice. Valentines Day is a great time to let your parents know that you love them.

The boys were down by just one point at half time but then they went into a zone defense and Roncalli got hot. The boys ended up losing that game 69-45. Nathan Drake had 12 points to lead the boys. Then Sioux Valley came to town and Sioux Valley was ranked number 5 in the state. This was a huge District and LCC battle. This game was by far the best game any of us have seen is a long while of a time. The boys held a monumental upset by defeating archrival Sioux Valley 45-44 with an eventual game winning 3-pointer by Nathan Drake. Travis V. had 16 points to lead the boys and Nathan D. had 15 in the win. The boys travel to Clark today for a big NEC battle.

Spark

Spark is a instant messenger that our school started to use. You can send instant messeges to your teachers to ask them questions or send other students messeges to ask them questions. You can easly get ahold of any of your teachers to ask them about an assignment or ask them for help. Spark is very neat so that you can have private chats with your friends, but as long as you don't say any bad language you shouldn't get in trouble on it. Spark has every high school student and all the high school teachers on there for your contacts. So that is how the new chat rooms are-- which is pretty cool to use.

Clear Lake Blood Drive

For the past seven years the Clear Lake community has been donating blood faithfully to the blood drive. The blood drive takes place at the community center on Main Street. When a person wants to give blood there are some requirements that they have to meet before they can give. Some of the requirements to give blood are that you have to be 17 or older, but not over sixty. You have to weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health, you can not give blood if you have taken medicine recently.

“Giving blood helps people who have had surgery, who have been in accidents and needed a transfusion, and many other things.” said Doris Wilson, who has worked at the blood mobile in clear lake for the past seven years.

On an average, they collect about sixty pints of blood a day, but of course they could always collect more if people donated! After giving blood the giver is required to drink a glass of water first then when they are feeling better they can either have more water or they may have a glass of orange juice, there are also crackers and cookies that they can munch on. When they blood is taken it gets put directly into coolers to keep it safe on the way to hospitals.

On Wednesday and Thurday the Sophomores did "how to" speeches in English class. Sophomore Brooke Peterson did her speech about making her Grandma's brownies. Born on February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln's birthday was first celebrated in 1865, the year after he was assassinated. Sophomores have been working on their South America maps in Geography this week because they are using them for their unit. Sophomores were assigned to have a country in South America and write about it so everyone else in the class could learn more about South America.

Two of the students in geography are Tina Gniffke and Anthony Moore. Tina was assigned to the country of Columbia. So she has to find information about that country and then inform the class on it. Anthony has the country Bolivia that he will need to inform the class as well.

Junior Short Stories

For the last month the Junior class has been reading short stories and poems by numerous authors and learning about those authors. Some of the authors that we have learned about are Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. We also read stories by Frederick Douglass, and Harriet A. Jacobs. Both of those authors expressed there views on slavery. We have read spirituals, which are songs that the slaves sang when they worked in the fields.

Super Bowl

This past Sunday the Super Bowl was show cased. It was the most watched T.V. in history. Cardinals ended up losing and Steelers made it into the history books for being the only team that has won SIX Super Bowls. But during the game there were a cupple of interresting calls made by the referees. They wern't very fair and wernt very right. Some of the calls were so off that it really looked as if the Steelers paid the ref.s to call everything even if its noticable. But once the last quarter was on then the gloves came off. Both teams were trying very hard to win and at 4 minutes the Cardinals made a touch down, they were in head of the Steelers. Then when there was about 30 seconds left the Steelers made the touch down of a life time!! Everyone was either dissopointed or to excited. There was nothing that anyone could do, the Steelers had won. But both teams had a great season!

Psychology Test

On Wednesday we are taking a test in psychology. It is chapter 5 test. In this chapter we have learned about sleep and why we cant sleep. We have also learned about why people have nightmares. Drugs and their effect on a persons ability to sleep. We also learned about altered states of consciousness. The test is going to be over all of these subjects. Most people who study will do well because most of the tests Ms. Eggers gives in psychology are kind of easy.

Groundhog Day is an annual holidayon February 2 in the United States and Canada, which tells if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. On the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, that means winter will continue for six weeks. There also is a movie made in 1993 called Groundhog Day. The Goundhog's name is Phil.
